Workforce Empowerment Pathways

Built by peers, for peers. A structured pathway from lived experience to professional practice, specialization training, and leadership opportunities. Developed and operated by The Empower Collective LLC.

What It Is

More than a certification. A pathway forward

Most people entering peer work get a certificate and a job description. WEP is built around everything in between, and everything after.

Too many capable people with lived experience remain locked out of the workforce by limited references, employment gaps, justice-system involvement, stigma, and too few accessible entry points. WEP was created to help close that gap by connecting preparation, practical experience, mentorship, and advancement within one structured pathway.

Developed by The Empower Collective, Workforce Empowerment Pathways is built by people who understand these barriers personally. We believe someone’s past should not disqualify them from building a meaningful career path. Lived experience, when strengthened through training and professional development, is a valuable workforce asset.

WEP goes beyond certification. Participants are supported in developing a professional peer identity, gaining practical experience, strengthening workplace skills, preparing for specialized roles and future leadership opportunities

Who It's For

Built for those ready to step into professional peer roles, and the organizations ready to invest in them

WEP serves two audiences at once. It only works when both are in the room.

For individuals

Your experience can become the foundation for what comes next

You do not need a degree, a perfect record, or your entire future figured out. WEP is for individuals at every stage in their journey.

This includes:

  • Individuals exploring peer work for the first time
  • People preparing for peer training or certification
  • Newly certified peers seeking experience, mentorship, and career direction
  • Individuals facing employment barriers, including limited experience, employment gaps, or justice-system involvement
  • Working peer professionals ready to explore specialty certification, mentorship of others, or leadership opportunities
  • Adults reentering the workforce, who want their lived experience recognized as a strength and not treated as a barrier

You enter with your personal experience, strengths, and willingness to grow. WEP is designed to help you discover where your unique experiences, strengths, and goals can take you.

For organizations

Employers building or strengthening a peer workforce

WEP is also the pipeline and support structure for organizations that need prepared, supervised, well-retained peer professionals.

  • Behavioral health providers integrating peer roles into their service model
  • Workforce agencies and managed care organizations funding peer workforce growth
  • Community-based organizations adding peer outreach or navigation capacity
  • Employers and community partners seeking prepared and dedicated peer talent
  • Employers hosting volunteer, internship, or work-based learning placements
  • Organizations that can hire but struggle to prepare, supervise, retain, and advance peer staff

The Pathway

Four stages, one continuous route

Participants enter at the stage that matches where they are. Nobody restarts at zero because of where they have already been.

01 Stage One

Prepare

Readiness, orientation to the field, and peer workforce training. Ethics, boundaries, confidentiality, documentation, and the practical skills of holding a job, plus support navigating certification requirements.

02 Stage Two

Practice

Mentorship and nonclinical peer supervision alongside volunteer, internship, and work-based learning placements. Real settings, real accountability, real feedback, before everything depends on it.

03 Stage Three

Specialize

Focused development in a practice area: outreach, resource navigation, care coordination, community health, or another specialty. Continued supervision as the work gets more complex, not less.

04 Stage Four

Lead

Leadership development for experienced peer professionals: mentoring and supervising other peers, program and team leadership, curriculum and training delivery, and shaping the peer workforce itself.

What runs through every stage. Peer workforce training · mentorship · nonclinical peer supervision · professional development · leadership support · volunteer, internship, and work-based learning placements · employer partnership development.
Career Pathways

The roles we are building toward

Every pathway starts from the same place, a strong professional peer foundation, and branches into work that keeps lived experience at the center.

Foundation

Peer Support

Direct peer support in individual and group settings. The professional core of every other pathway: engagement, self-advocacy, skill development, and connection.

Specialty

Community Health

Peer roles at the intersection of health and community, supporting whole-person wellness, prevention, and access to care in the places people actually live.

Specialty

Outreach

Street, field, and community outreach. Building trust with people who are disconnected from services and often have good reason to be.

Specialty

Resource Navigation

Helping people find, reach, and stay connected to housing, benefits, treatment, and basic needs, and making sure the handoff actually holds.

Specialty

Care Coordination

Coordinating across providers, systems, and services so support arrives as one plan rather than a stack of appointments.

Leadership

Workforce Development

Training, mentoring, and supervising the next generation of peer professionals. Curriculum delivery, program leadership, and building the field itself.

Straight talk about outcomes. WEP prepares people for opportunities, builds partnerships, and strengthens pathways. Employers, certification bodies, licensing authorities, and funders retain full responsibility for their own eligibility, hiring, credentialing, and selection decisions. Participation in WEP is not a guarantee of certification, employment, placement, or promotion.

Scope

What WEP is not

Being clear about our boundaries is part of doing this responsibly. Empower Collective is not:

  • A licensed behavioral health treatment provider
  • A clinical mental health or substance use treatment program
  • A staffing or temporary employment agency
  • A physical apprenticeship site
  • A state-recognized apprenticeship program unless separately approved
  • A certification, licensing, or credentialing authority
  • A guarantee of certification, employment, placement, or promotion
  • A replacement for clinical care, crisis services, or emergency services
Workforce Empowerment Pathways is developed and operated by The Empower Collective LLC. Program documents and agreements identify the responsibilities of everyone involved, including participants, employers, and host organizations. Read more about who we are →
